Beam-propagation method analysis of a nonlinear directional coupler

The beam-propagation method is employed to analyze nonlinear directional-coupler operation for various combinations of nonlinear materials and initially mismatched guides. A mixed focusing-defocusing configuration is found to give optimal results.
