Abstract

Sleep is an essential process for mind and body health, allowing for restoration and optimal daytime performance. It consists of several different stages and is carefully orchestrated by the nervous system. Insufficient sleep quantity or quality can result in adverse health outcomes including reduced cognitive function, increased risk of injury, a compromised immune system, as well as cardiometabolic health conditions. These can have a negative impact on athletic performance. This chapter will discuss the foundations of sleep health and introduce key concepts relevant to athletes.
