Abstract
This essay examines a structural similarity between psychoanalysis and sadomasochism as parallel practices that allow for the possibility of personal transformation to emerge through the constitution of asymmetrical intimate relations. Through close readings of the works of Adam Phillips and Emmanuel Ghent, the essay argues that psychoanalysis sometimes holds sadomasochism in contempt out of a need to disavow this structural similarity.
