Abstract

To the Editor: Although Dr. Burrows and his colleagues (Feb. 2 issue) 1 present an interesting analysis of the relation between asthma and serum IgE levels, we do not believe that their results are relevant to an understanding of intrinsic asthma. Their data reconfirm that within a population, asthma is statistically related to increases in total serum IgE levels. Their finding that the results of specific skin tests were linked more closely with rhinitis than with asthma was to be expected, since four of the extracts they used for skin testing were relevant to outdoor exposure and are commonly associated with.
