Abstract

The compositing algorithm of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) vegetation index (VI) is described. The algorithm uses a bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) model to produce nadir looking equivalent reflectance values if enough cloud free observations are available during a 16-day compositing period. Preliminary results show that the MODIS compositing algorithm has improved upon the conventional maximum value composite (MVC) technique. The view zenith angles of the composite pixels were found to be closer to nadir for the MODIS algorithm than for the MVC.
