Abstract

Throughout this chapter our focus has been on the assessment and treatment of the offender. People who commit sexual crimes, however, do not reside in a vacuum and their behavior also impacts on their family members. Although we feel that it is imperative that the offender be held responsible for his behavior and that he learn to control his deviant sexual interest patterns, we also feel that it is important that significant others and family members receive counseling to help them deal with the impact of the offender's behavior, as well as to address any issues within the family that may serve as StreSsors to the offender and serve to weaken his control. Although a body of knowledge is beginning to accumulate on the assessment and treatment of sexual offenders, many questions remain unanswered. If sex crimes are to be prevented, we need to develop a better understanding of how deviant sexual interest patterns develop and how we can identify and provide services to those most at risk for the development of these aberrant arousal patterns.
