Abstract

To the Editor: In their excellent review article on the use of aspirin in ischemic heart disease (July 16 issue),1 Willard et al. cite the Department of Veterans Affairs cooperative studies,2 , 3 but we would like to emphasize that our recent work demonstrates that preoperative aspirin offers no additional benefit in early vein-graft patency as compared with aspirin therapy (325 mg) that begins six hours after surgery. Moreover, by avoiding preoperative aspirin, it is possible to eliminate potential bleeding complications.4 For completeness, we would also like to point out that although aspirin has been shown to improve vein-graft patency both one…
