note = "Funding Information: Peter Robertshaw, Bako Rasoarifetra, Marilee Wood, Erik Melchiorre, Rachel Popelka-Filcoff and Michael Glascock discuss chemical analyses obtained on 31 glass trade beads from two sites in Madagascar. This research is a small part of a recently-completed program of analysis of about 1000 glass beads from selected sites in southern, eastern and west Africa, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, so the small sample discussed here is interpreted in the context of a massive amount of comparative data generated by the project, and from studies of historic glass composition in potential source areas. Further articles on this project are in preparation and will examine long-distance trade connections throughout the Islamic era to west and southern Africa.",
