Abstract
A description is made of the Kalman filter algorithm and of its applications to the study of rainfall-runoff relationships. The applications cover classical hydrologic techniques like the instantaneous unit hydrograph, as well as schemes for real time hydrologic forecasting. Emphasis is made on the body of information necessary for the application of the Kalman filter as well as the uncertainties which in hydrology are imbedded in this necessary information. The identification of the noise covariance matrices are specifically discussed. The effect of the uncertainty in the lag-structure of the model as well as the difference between transients and real changes in the system is treated in a hydrologic context. Refs.
