Abstract

Alice is a Portuguese film directed by Marco Martins and released in 2005. The film tells the story of disappearance of a young girl. In his attempt to find his daughter, her father (Nuno Lopes) installs cameras in places he believes she might be seen and follows the same routine of the day the girl disappeared. This silent film provides a point of departure for reflecting on some of the paradoxes that are part of our contemporary world. This essay focuses on some of the strategies used by the director to re-map the city and its inhabitants, denouncing some of the challenges facing the Portuguese society.
