"Adopt-a-school" to boost stem education

Abstract

A group of University of Arizona faculty and students of the department of atmospheric sciences began a program 'Adopt-A-School' (AAS) aimed at providing an opportunity to interact with students from a low-income elementary school in Tucson, Arizona, the US. AAS aimed at providing the teachers with a network of support in science and mathematics while at the same time providing role models for children pursuing careers in science and technology. A faculty member or graduate student visits a particular teacher and his or her class over the course of the year. The volunteers helped the students to learn about the scientific method, to develop problems and hypotheses, to design and conduct their experiments, and to analyze their results. AAS is a pilot program with one elementary school, but the volunteers intend to grow the program and encourage other groups on campus to adopt schools of their own.
