Abstract

The adolescent population has special characteristics and needs particularly with regard to the problems of substance abuse. The clinical presentation of adolescent substance abuse may be subtle and varied, but the primary care clinician is often in a unique position to diagnose the problem and help the patient seek treatment. Although community education and anticipatory guidance are important in prevention, an approach that emphasizes early intervention, family involvement, and a holistic approach to rehabilitaion are key to success in treatment.
