Abstract
The 56 known human adenovirus serotypes infect a broad range of organ systems, resulting in upper respiratory tract infections, febrile illnesses, conjunctival infections, and gastroenteritis. Adenoviruses are an important cause of acute respiratory disease in military trainees and have been linked to obesity in children and adults. They cause systemic infections in immunocompromised patients (transplant recipients, cancer and AIDS patients), resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Adenoviruses remain infectious for extended periods on environmental surfaces and in water. They have been implicated in recreational water outbreaks (mostly swimming pools) and are consistently detected in high numbers in wastewater.
