Abstract
Image compression has inherent smoothing operations that could potentially impact the detection and hence the contrast-detail characteristics of high-frequency or small objects. This could potentially improve the image quality at low compression ratios if smoothing of high-frequency noise is dominant. A study on image compression had indicated that certain promising aspects of JPEG 2000 for the compression of digital mammography image data.
