Abstract
The probability distribution of the initial soil moisture concentration of a catchment was derived based on the one-dimensional infiltration-exfiltration process of a layer of soil. Analytical expressions were found for the initial and final soil moisture concentration during a storm event. These analytical expressions were then used in simulation experiments for different combinations of climate and soil characteristics to evaluate the average soil moisture concentration at the beginning of a storm and its variance. A beta PDF was then fitted to completely characterize its probability distribution. Finally, a general expression for both the mean and the variance of the initial soil moisture is given based only on climate and soil characteristics.
