Abstract

A classical model is developed to analyze second-harmonic generation from metamaterials consisting of periodic arrays of metal nanoparticles. The quasi-free electrons inside the metal are approximated as a Coulomb-interacting electron gas, and their motion under the excitation of an external electromagnetic field is described by the cold-plasma equations. Numerical simulations for different cell geometries yield good qualitative agreement with experiments.
