3D Endoscopy in Scattering Environments using Synthetic Wavelength Holography

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Conference contribution

Abstract

Fiber optic endoscopy using multi-core fiber bundles has a wide range of applications across fields ranging from medical imaging to industrial inspection. Traditional endoscopes, however, are mostly limited to acquiring 2D image information and cannot acquire images through a scattering medium between object and distal end of the fiber. To address these challenges, we present a lensless endoscopy approach based on Synthetic Wavelength Holography (SWH). In SWH, two optical fields acquired at closely spaced wavelengths are mixed to assemble a hologram at a larger “synthetic wavelength” which is largely immune to phase perturbations from scattering. Moreover, the hologram allows the recovery of three-dimensional object information in a lensless imaging configuration, mitigating the need for additional optics. In this contribution, we showcase our prototype SWH endoscope system and demonstrate 3D imaging of ~500 um lateral features of objects hidden behind scattering media in an increased field of view.
