Description
Level I (L1) and Level II (L2) global 0.5 degree phenoregions in geotiff format. Hierarchical sets of regions with similar phenological characteristics ("phenoregions") based on self-organizing map (SOM) clusters fit using 2007-2015 mean monthly NDVI from AVHRR, solar-induced fluorescence from GOME-2, and vegetation optical depth from AMSR-E and AMSR-2. Twelve Level I phenoregions were defined using a SOM in a 3x4 rectangular node arrangement, which roughly self-organized the clusters along two dimensions based on pixel peak productivity and seasonality. Each Level I phenoregion was then further subset into six Level II phenoregions (resulting in 72 total Level II phenoregions) using a second SOM in a 2x3 rectangular node arrangement, which captured further detail on productivity, seasonality, bimodality, and phase of the phenological cycle within each Level I ecoregion.
